The History of West Acres:
William (Bill) Schlossman’s vision of a retail center was realized on August 2, 1972, when he and a team of local partners opened West Acres Shopping Center.

The Fargo-Moorhead Community

West Acres Development, LLP, and the West Acres Merchants Association have always considered being a partner in our community a priority. It is more than just generating good will; it is the belief that being an active community supporter helps make the metropolitan and surrounding rural communities a better place to live, work, and raise families.

West Acres was just honored with the Business Arts Advocate of the Year for 2007 by the Lake Agassiz Arts Council. The Council is the umbrella organization for 58 of the area’s arts organizations. This award, now in its fourth year, is the region’s most prestigious recognition for business support of the arts. Charitable Giving:

West Acres Development is a strong supporter of our community through significant charitable giving to a variety of causes and organizations. A few of these organizations include:

  • Boy Scouts
  • FM Symphony
  • Fargo Theatre
  • Great Plains Food Bank
  • Lake Agassiz Arts Council
  • Plains Art Museum
  • Red River Zoological Society
  • Trollwood Performing Arts School
  • United Way
  • Village Family Service Center
  • YMCA
  • YWCA

Community Events:

West Acres provides space and a strong customer base that assists well over 100 non-profit organizations and community service agencies in raising funds and creating awareness. West Acres, through hosting community events, becomes a place where many of these organizations can interact with the public on a personal level.

A few of our community events are:

Cookbook Festival (February): Non-profits sell their cookbooks as a fundraiser.
Bazaarfest (October): Area churches and non-profits hold their bazaars in the mall to raise funds.
Holiday Clearing Bureau's "The Giving Tree" (November-December) at West Acres generated gifts to about 1,500 individuals during the holiday season.
FM 105.1's "Christmas Wish" Wishburgers (June) served 2,000 people in the West Acres parking lot in 2006, raising $10,000 in donations.
FM 105.1's "Christmas Wish" Request-A-Thon (December) consistently raises more than $10,000 in donations for needy individuals and families during the holidays.
“It's a Wonderful Night” (Sunday before Thanksgiving): Annual night of shopping whose $5 entrance fees/ticket sales benefit area organizations. The annual event raises between $20,000-$30,000 for area organizations.
